“On July 24th, 2025, National Police Defense Foundation Executive Director Joe Occhipinti (third from right) presented Yonkers, NY Detective Sergeant Hector Cartegena (left) and renowned criminal defense attorney Joseph Tacopina, (third from left) with the NPDF’s Profiles in Courage Award for their victory in winning a “not guilty” verdict for Sgt. Cartegena against a politically motivated prosecution in Yonkers, New York. In attendance also are NPDF Delegate George Greco (middle) along with highly respected members of the Seagate Law Enforcement Foundation, who were committed supporters of Sgt. Cartegena from the beginning.  The NPDF will be collaborating with the Seagate Law Enforcement Foundation in the creation of a Legal Defense Fund to assist Sgt. Cartegena in his quest to clear his good name in response to slanderous remarks that were alleged to have been made to the media by Mayor Mike Spano after Sergeant Cartegena was acquitted by a jury who heard the evidence against him. The NPDF commends Det. Sgt. Cartegena and his very capable attorney, Joe Tacopina for their hard-fought victory.  Congratulations! “
